Don River Railway upgrade
The Devonport Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) is backing the Don River Railway’s ambitious vision to undergo a major upgrade.
Spokesperson for the DCCI, Rod Bramich, said the proposed $2 million upgrade to the tourist drawcard would be a boon for regional business and provide a distinctly Devonport experience.
“The Don River Railway is absolutely iconic and an upgrade of this size is truly a project of regional significance,” Mr Bramich said.
“The stretch of rail between Don and Penguin is one of the great rail journeys of the world but currently the only people who get to enjoy it are our lucky freight train drivers.
“Rail tourism is big business and the whole Cradle Coast region can benefit from a big boost to visitor numbers from this attraction.
“It also ties in so well with the West Coast Wilderness Railway – a trip to Tassie for heritage train buffs could soon take you through green rolling hills and stunning coastal vistas, as well as our wild rainforests and gorges.”
